Documentary evidence was not used
in the case except that the statements by Wardmaster E. W.
Dawson, a witness who was unable to attend owing
to sickness
rivelareee, and a declaration in favour of Dr. Laing by Mr. ---
A. H. Ough who had left the Colony were read to the Council,
Copies of these documents are annexed together with the
shorthand-writer's notes of all the evidence taken.

The Council were unanimous in
finding Dr. Laing guilty of the first charge and the
majority considered he was also guilty of the third though
his conduct on the night of the 25th.
26th. May was look-
-ed upon as evidence of the intemperate habit which might
have had such serious results on the former occasion than
in itself a very grave offence.

I fully concurred in the opinion
of the Council and informed Dr. Laing in their presence
that his suspension would be reported to you for your ap-
-proval and confirmation.
7.
He then asked permission to resign
his appointment. In view of the facts that according to
the testimonials in his possession his conduct before
coming to this Colony was excellent, that the occurrence
of the night of the 8th.
9th. May was the first offence
